Do you play music while you write? If so what’s your favorite?
Sometimes I write in silence. Sometimes instrumental jazz, sometimes classical, especially if I’m writing historical. For a few novels I was listening to Burlap to Cashmere as they kind of inspired two of my books. If I’m writing outside, it’s the sounds of wind in the trees and the birds. Kind of depends on my mood. I used to only write in silence but sometimes background music is good.
Does anyone in your family read your books?
My mom and one sister do, and possible others that I’m unaware of. My kids? No. Maybe someday my daughter will. My husband is not a reader but he has listened to some of the audio books for The Black Diamond Regency Series and loved them.
Do you have any other writers in your family?
Yes! My paternal grandfather, James B. Pollard was an amazing author I was honored to type up his writings from WWII after his death and publish them in a little book called Journey to Lekhipani: A G.I.’s Experiences in WWII. It is even in a national Army library collection!
My step-grandfather, Earl K. Wichern wrote and published a book called Life on the Slow Track: A True Adventure Story which details how he and some friends rode bikes from Wisconsin to the World Fair in New York, singing their way across the country and doing chores to earn money. It’s a fascinating story! Definitely not something you could do now—at least not the way the way they did it!
My second paternal cousin once removed, Richard S. Brown wrote and had published a historical crime thriller called Going Off the Rails. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet!
What is your pet peeve?
People who are chronically (and unapologetically) late. And too many wrinkles in the top sheet when I get into bed. It doesn’t need to be ironed, just smoothed out.
