The thing I love most about writing is getting into the “zone” or what some call the creative flow state. It is a delightful place to be.

Of course, before I can even begin writing I delve into a considerable amount of research. Standard history textbooks offer very little detailed information about the past, which I find disappointing, but many non-fiction authors devote their time to chronicling more comprehensive information. I am grateful to them and their dedication. In addition, I love to tour historical sites and often a visit to one of those places will spark my imagination for a book.

Once my research is in order, I sit in front of the computer and type. I am more of a pantser than a plotter, though I work from a basic outline. With historicals it is important to know what happened, when it happened, and what life was like during that specific time period. I enjoy giving cameo roles to historical figures. In Patriot’s Courage, there is Mad Anthony Wayne, Blue jacket, the Shawnee war chief, and Buckongahelas, the renowned Lenape chief.

While focusing on my characters and the plot, all my external worries and distractions vanish. It is a great gift and I am thankful for it. People may experience a similar flow state in reading a book but I find with writing I am far more involved than I am when I am reading.

I am always looking forward to writing another book so I can drop into the zone and type up a story. It’s fun!
