Vacations are supposed to be relaxing. That’s what I thought when I booked an Alaskan cruise for my twentieth wedding anniversary. When our ship docked in Juneau, my family took a sea plane out to the Taku Glacier Lodge. We wanted to see the scenery of Alaska, maybe glimpse a black bear, and view a glacier from the lodge steps. Little did I know that over lunch I would hear a story that would set my mind to churning.

The Taku Lodge has been in existence since the 1920’s. At one time, a WWI veteran and his caregiver lived at the lodge. Later, I found out that the two trained sled dogs. I kept thinking a man and a woman alone in a lodge.

I don’t know what war wounds the veteran received, and I don’t know much about the caregiver except her name and that she hailed from my state of Wisconsin. But in my head a novel was born. I began writing “Until June” over a decade ago. And today, I am thrilled that Geoff and Josephine are going to have their day in the sun.

I hope you enjoy my story that started on a vacation long ago. A wounded warrior, a devoted seamstress, and an abandoned dog all find hope and love at a true-to-life lodge.

Has a vacation ever birthed a story in your brain?
