5 of 5 Stars One year after the Civil War, Abigail's mother insists her husband must be dead and sends Abigail off to live with her Aunt Alice and Uncle Samuel, a preacher who beats her. She vows never to have anything to do with church folks and runs away. She meets a Yankee soldier who lost his memory and a leg in the war. Together, they go hoboing--he hopes to find his memory and she hopes to find her Pa. The soldier guides her along the way and keeps her safe. She is only seventeen and very naive. I kept turning the pages as the two wandered, following the hobo marks on the trail, and hopping on a train. This was such a delightful, fresh tale.
