Chester’s Miracle by M. Jean Pike Sometimes as things age, they are perceived to lose their value. Unfortunately, we live in a throw-away culture and often see that happen, even with people. Ms. Pike has written a heartwarming story of a service dog, Chester, who has aged and is no longer willing or able to perform his duties as he once did. So society says he’s lost his value. Because he is no longer able to perform the duties that he once could, his owner sends him to a veterinarian to be euthanized. Aimee, a vet tech, is particularly drawn to Chester. She understands how people are often judged, and she sees more value in this sweet dog than others might. Looking for a dating relationship, Aimee’s gotten involved with a man online, and he’s invited her to come see him for Thanksgiving. Although her sister realizes something’s not quite right and warns against it, Aimee doesn’t listen and, not wanting to drive though the winter mountains alone, she takes Chester with her. As the winter weather worsens and heavy snow falls, Aimee loses her way and runs out of gas. But when she reaches out to the man who invited her to come, his online presence has disappeared and his phone is no longer working. A man from a nearby farm seems to materialize and rescues her and Chester and takes them to his mother’s house. And…well, you’ll have to read the book to see what happens next. Chester’s Miracle is a moving story about forgiveness, acceptance, God’s care, and new beginnings. And none of it could have happened without Chester.
