(image for) 5 of 5 Stars5 of 5 Stars This was an absorbing journey into the medieval past. While it is Christmastime, for Alisoun, it is not a time for celebration. She is to be wed to a withered old man. According to the binding cultural customs of the day, she has no choice. Her father made the betrothal years ago before he died. The king approves of the marriage and betrothal was as sacred as marriage. Alisoun knows her duty but when she sees a stranger at the feast, she is as taken with him as he is with her. She believes they can play act as lord and lady for Christmas Day. Though her uncle has other plans, Alisoun remains true to her faith. Really a fascinating trip into the ancient conventions of those long ago times.
