This is a beautiful story of love and acceptance. Set in the late 1800’s, Love’s Gift addresses a time in history when American was suffering from growing pains as it faced racial prejudice and gender prejudice. Amaranth Beach was a Chinese orphan, who, as a baby, was left on the beach. She is taken in by some nuns in an orphanage who raised her and taught her to be faithful and loving toward all. Amaranth gets hired as a secretary for the wealthy Mrs. Tildon, who is a suffragette. Mrs. Tildon has a son, William. Intelligent and creative, William is attracted to Amaranth, but social mores discourage any relationship with her. I loved the way this book addressed prejudice and social change all wrapped up in a love story. Bravo, Ms. Marzec for a beautiful and captivating story.
