(image for) 5 of 5 Stars5 of 5 Stars Someone to Watch over Me is the second book in Lesa Henderson’s Laurel Ridge series; however, I had not read the first book. Sometimes when that’s the case, I feel like I’ve been dropped in the middle of something, and everything feels a little off in an annoying way. Not so here. The author did a great job of setting the scene without giving anything from the first story away. Well done.

I was recently in an online discussion about high-drama, high-stakes in Christian fiction. I came down on the side of not wanting too much angst and worry in a story. I think I’ve drifted this way over the past two years, given how drastically life has changed. When I sit down with a book, I don’t want a stomach-twisting, nail-biting plot, I just want to escape into a sweet romance. All this to say that Someone to Watch over Me fit the bill perfectly. There was some mystery and intrigue, but nothing that made my heart race. And it was a good, old-fashioned love story with (spoiler alert, but not really) a happy ending.

This is one of those books where the significance of the title isn’t revealed until the very end of the book. What I had built up in my mind turned out not to be true, but that was OK. The real meaning behind the title was much better and when it hit me, a little bubble of joy popped in my chest!

This was a lovely read, and now I’m happily reading the first book of the series.
