I enjoyed this book so much! It put me in mind of reading Jeanette Oke’s ‘Drums of Change’. Comparing someone to Jeanette Oke is about the highest praise that I can give!

The pros:

This was an exciting and engrossing narrative with vivid imagery and thoughtful insight into the motivation of Tawan and Christina.

It was uplifting to watch Tawan’s sacrificial patience change her heart and open her eyes to the unfair prejudices of her belief system. It brought tears to my eyes to experience how these acts helped to improve his self-worth.

Christina’s metamorphosis was equally compelling, growing from a spoiled, sheltered girl to a patient woman offering whatever help she could give in return.

More than a romance, this is a story of faith, and seeing yourself in a new light.

Side note: It is an interesting fact that Tawan has blue eyes. This intimates that he isn’t the first multi-racial person accepted into the fold of his mother’s people. Clearly they are also strong examples of love and acceptance. This is a beautifully subtle detail.

Suggested Areas for improvement:

I would be interested in learning more about where the author did her research for the book. I think that a blurb about this at the beginning of the story could have added an extra layer of credibility. I can fall into a historical narrative, even a fictional narrative, more easily when I have this information.

The use of the phrase “cute, furry animals” was jarring as it seemed more like a phrase used in modern vernacular.

I think that the author over exaggerates Tawan’s rusty use of English at the beginning of the story, since he is so well-spoken throughout the rest of the book.

I received an ARC of this book from Pelican Book Group, and I am leaving a voluntary review.

Have a lovely day!
