(image for) 5 of 5 Stars5 of 5 Stars Barbara M. Britton is rapidly becoming my go-to author for fictionalized accounts of women in the Bible. In particular, I like the way her vivid descriptions paint a picture of everyday life in Biblical times. I thoroughly enjoyed her first series, The Tribes of Israel, and was excited to receive an advanced review copy of Lioness: Mahlah’s Journey, the first book in her new series, the Daughters of Zelophehad. Lioness focuses on Mahlah, the eldest daughter of the family, who becomes caretaker to her four younger sisters after their father’s tragic death. Rather than give in to despair, Mahlah fights to claim her family’s inheritance, challenging the rules of her patriarchal society. Although I was often frustrated with the men in this story, I found myself cheering internally every time Mahlah stood her ground. Her relationship with her sisters was another of the story’s strengths, and I am looking forward to reading about their journeys in Britton’s next two books.
