(image for) 5 of 5 Stars5 of 5 Stars Never a dull moment. I’d recommend this story to anyone who enjoys suspense. The opening starts with a bang. The chapters end with hooks to keep the reader’s interest. The character of a special needs boy who responds to pictures and signs adds depth to the story.
PI Lela Ortiz is emotionally and physically scarred. She works for International Retrieval Organization. Jay is introduced having a flashback while caring for his nieces and nephew. The children’s father, Jay’s brother-in-law, has been abducted in Mexico. Lela’s handler assigns her to the case. She has to work with Jay. There is obvious tension between the two over his “religion” and prayer life.
Undercurrents of attraction build between Jay and Lela. Questions arise concerning her secret past and Jay’s flashbacks. The hostage is videoed and leaves clues/hints esp through signs, addressed to his son. What he said doesn’t make sense, but pieced together, Jay and Lela use a hidden safety deposit key to find a journal and several baby photos.
I enjoyed the twist, the explanation of Lela’s mom’s request for help, the wrap-up, and the HEA. I received a copy from the author and comments are my own.
