I love Rosanna and her sense of independence and dignity, and desire to assist those without a champion during an era when young women had little recourse. After losing her first love, Rosanna vows never to marry, and later, to do all she can to help other women who are being coerced into marriages of convenience. The plan backfires when she realizes she can’t advertise about her recently purchased refuge, as that would alert society—the very issue she wants to avoid.

It doesn’t take long before her maid, promoted to companion, finds true love in the local vicar, and Rosanna is once again being courted by a bothersome neighbor with ulterior motives. Moreover, a mysterious stranger resides in a corner of her own little kingdom—one very handsome and lonesome, lowborn cottage who shouldn’t attract Rosanna.

Lord Peter Winstead managed to retain his title—the only thing he has left from a once-precious estate. He’s embarrassed at his current impoverished state, bewildered by his recent rash behavior in trying to save his lands, and thoroughly demoralized to be attracted to the new owner of his home.
One would think things couldn’t get worse when secrets and lies begin to unravel for these two lost souls, but of course it does. Relying on forgiveness and true faith, Peter and Rosanna learn to understand and appreciate their heritage and their hearts.

Regency period stories have their own rules, language, and codes of honor. Susan Karsten follows them lovingly. Those who enjoy the fate of torn hems, dressing for company, etiquette and chaperons, dinner parties and intrigue will enjoy A Refuge for Rosanna.
