Characters are introduced at appropriate times without overwhelming the reader. The characters are then developed throughout the book in a manner that fits the plot and flows from it. Karsten even includes an element of solving a mystery that help to round out the story and the characters.

Another great aspect of the book is Susan Karsten's weaving the characters' spiritual attitudes, reasoning, and changes into the story. Rather than ignore these vital parts of being human, Karsten works them in, which enhances the book.
