After his father retires, Vere Idowu returns to Wychwood Cross to take over the family greengrocers. As Christmas looms, he divides his time between running the shop, attending rehearsals for the choral society production of Messiah, and continuing the family tradition of leaving a welcome basket of seasonal fruit and veg on the doorstep.
Struggling with writer’s block, author Robyn Yardley moves to the country just before Christmas to finish the book she started over a year ago. The last thing on her mind is socializing, much less romance, but the local choral society needs sopranos for the Christmas concert. And the cute greengrocer did invite her to try out.
Finding a friend in Vere lifts Robyn's spirits. Singing lifts her soul. And thankfully, she’s finally making headway on the book. That’s until the past and present collide, and everything changes.
As a bit of an Anglophile, the setting of Just Another Winter’s Tale was extremely appealing to me. I especially enjoyed Revell’s twist (I won’t say more to avoid spoilers) because I didn’t see it coming. A fun surprise!
I really enjoyed Clare Revell’s newest Christmas novella, Just Another Winter’s Tale. It’s a story of moving on with life even in the midst of sorrow and loss. Well-loved Wychwood Cross Green Grocer, Vere Idowu, is a kindhearted and generous man. He’s still struggling to get over the painful death of his sister. Robyn Yardley, a struggling author with a bad case of writer’s block. She’d just moved Wychwood Cross to try and clear her mind so that she can finish her manuscript. Vere and Robyn live close to each other, and as he helps her get settled in her new place, the two become more than simply friends. While both would like to take their relationship to a more serious place. A tragic event in Vere’s life prevents that. I must say, Ms. Revell had me guessing to the end, and then I got it wrong. This is an engaging book, perfect for the Christmas season.
This is a fun and romantic Christmas read set in a charming small town in England. Wychwood Cross seems like a place I would like to visit, filled with people I would like to know. Clare Revel’s writing is a delight. Just Another Winter’s Tale is anything but. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a fun, faith filled Christmas read that includes plenty of surprises, and even a recipe!
