When high school basketball star and ranch hand Haggai Procter backs out of their date to the winter formal, Elli Martin’s heart both breaks in heartache and understanding. Haggs’s mom needs him, and Elli has lost two mothers. One who went to heaven. The other who abandoned her and has now decided to return. Elli isn't ready to call Lynn "Mom" yet, but the dress she designed for Elli's formal is filled with love. But Haggs won’t get to see Elli wearing it. Heartbroken, she can't bring herself to tell anyone she's been stood up.

At an employee and family decorating the tree party the teens talk about their mothers. Elli lost two moms. Haggs fears his mother is dying.
