The Man She Fears Is Her Only Chance For Survival . . .

All Christina Astle wants is to reach Oregon before her baby is born, but the wagon train is attacked, and her husband killed, stranding her in a mountain labyrinth. Raised in the East, within civilization’s embrace, survival is not a skill she’s learned. Neither is evading the lone warrior dogging her trail.

Disgusted by the greed and cruelty of men like his white father, Towan has turned to the simpler existence of his mother’s tribal people. He is not prepared for the fiery woman who threatens to upturn his entire life … and his heart.

This was my first book by Angela Couch and it was spectacular! One of those stories I could not put down and finished it in a day and a half. I must admit that I am one of those people that get suckered into a book by the cover, despite telling myself "never judge a book by its cover" and sadly I did with this one and I'm so embarrassed about that because after all that's what this book is all about. For me judgement and biased opinions is the theme of this book. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of romance but it comes slowly. The story is set on the Oregon Trail and right away we meet our main characters Christina and Towan. They are definitely two very different people from different walks of life but they thrown together in a journey like none other. One in which they must set aside prejudices and trust each other. I must admit that there were times where Christina drove me a little crazy and I found her immature in some of the things she was doing especially towards Towan.

4.5/5stars I enjoyed this book so much! It put me in mind of reading Jeanette Oke’s ‘Drums of Change’. Comparing someone to Jeanette Oke is about the highest praise that I can give! The pros: This was an exciting and engrossing narrative with vivid imagery and thoughtful insight into the motivation of Tawan and Christina. It was uplifting to watch Tawan’s sacrificial patience change her heart and open her eyes to the unfair prejudices of her belief system. It brought tears to my eyes to experience how these acts helped to improve his self-worth. Christina’s metamorphosis was equally compelling, growing from a spoiled, sheltered girl to a patient woman offering whatever help she could give in return. More than a romance, this is a story of faith, and seeing yourself in a new light. Side note: It is an interesting fact that Tawan has blue eyes. This intimates that he isn’t the first multi-racial person accepted into the fold of his mother’s people. Clearly they are a

Nineteenth-century historical fiction is and always has been my favorite genre, one which I never tire of reading. While much of the subject matter may remain similar, skillful authors will develop unique sets of circumstances and create enough nuances to set their stories apart. Angela Couch accomplishes this with her novel “Heart of a Warrior,” which is a tale of survival, romance, and faith in the Rocky Mountains in 1859. This is the first of her works that I have read, and it won’t be the last. She draws readers in from the startling opening chapter and continues to pepper the novel with suspenseful scenes interspersed among the more domestic ones. Rife with the struggles of the western frontier, “Heart of a Warrior” nevertheless remains a predominantly character-driven story. All of the primary events in the novel serve to promote interaction between the characters, especially Christina and Towan. Towan is the first to suspect that God made their paths cross for a purpose, an
