Day of Reckoning

Never a dull moment. I’d recommend this story to anyone who enjoys suspense. The opening starts with a bang. The chapters end with hooks to keep the reader’s interest. The character of a special needs boy who responds to pictures and signs adds depth to the story. PI Lela Ortiz is emotionally and physically scarred. She works for International Retrieval Organization. Jay is introduced having a flashback while caring for his nieces and nephew. The children’s father, Jay’s brother-in-law, has been abducted in Mexico. Lela’s handler assigns her to the case. She has to work with Jay. There is obvious tension between the two over his “religion” and prayer life. Undercurrents of attraction build between Jay and Lela. Questions arise concerning her secret past and Jay’s flashbacks. The hostage is videoed and leaves clues/hints esp through signs, addressed to his son. Valerie caught my attention right from the beginning of the book and kept it to the end. I enjoyed the story and was intrigued to see where it was going. Her characters were believable and easy to relate to. I look forward to seeing what she does with her next book. She has an easygoing way of writing which I enjoy.
