Can love rewrite fate when duty binds their hands?
Lady Alisoun faces a future she never chose: marriage to an elderly lord to save her bankrupt family’s estate. Resigned to sacrifice, she finds solace only in Christmas Eve prayers, until a mysterious stranger appears in her chapel. Their stolen moment, sealed with a sprig of rosemary, ignites a dream for which she dares not hope.
Kitt, raised as a monastery oblate, has just discovered his true identity: heir to Whitsell. Bound by duty to marry Alisoun (yet unaware of her noble status), he’s torn between honor and the heart he’s already given to a woman he thinks is a commoner. But when their secret identities collide, joy is short-lived. King John’s wrath threatens to destroy everything...unless a king who loves games more than justice decides to play matchmaker.

This was an absorbing journey into the medieval past. While it is Christmastime, for Alisoun, it is not a time for celebration. She is to be wed to a withered old man. According to the binding cultural customs of the day, she has no choice. Her father made the betrothal years ago before he died. The king approves of the marriage and betrothal was as sacred as marriage. Alisoun knows her duty but when she sees a stranger at the feast, she is as taken with him as he is with her. She believes they can play act as lord and lady for Christmas Day. Though her uncle has other plans, Alisoun remains true to her faith. Really a fascinating trip into the ancient conventions of those long ago times.
