While the Israelites struggle to occupy the Promised Land of God, Mahlah bat Zelophehad is orphaned and left to care for her four sisters. But daughters of the dead are unable to inherit land, and it will take a miracle for Mahlah to obtain the means to care for her sisters and uphold the vow she made to her dying mother.

Mahlah must seek Moses, the leader of her people, and request something extraordinary—the right for a daughter to inherit her deceased father’s land. A right that will upset the ox-cart of male inheritance and thrust her into the role of a rebel.

But, God is the protector of the orphan and the widow, and five orphaned daughters need His help. With God, anything is possible. Even changing man’s tradition.

"Britton has an impressive ability to weave Biblical references, like worshipping pagan idols, into a story that feels nearly contemporary in its urgency and relevance. Those who are entrenched in Biblical reading will find plenty of familiar details, but even without that Mahlah and Britton’s other characters soar. The plot and setting are structured seamlessly and with such sensory and descriptive world-building that the characters move through challenges, develop relationships, and confront complex obstacles as if their lives are unfolding in a movie. Britton’s dialogue and narrative language keep readers rooted in this vivid time and place while unveiling the timelessness of romance, temptations, politics, financial stress, and family love" Read the full review https://www.goodreads.com/review/sh-

The Holy Bible is made up of 66 books. Some people are mentioned by name and some aren't. But there are 5 sister's in the book of Numbers that Author Barbara M. Britton has made to come to life. In Numbers, their father dies, they ask for his portion of land, and it's granted to them. But Author Britton has given us a glimpse of what the hardships must have been for those 5 NAMED sisters. Her take on the culture at the time (Biblical) to what the culture is now gives us a more in depth feeling of what their lives must have been like and the dangers they endured. Not only of the land, the enemy nations, but their own clansmen that believed women didn't have a voice in matters. Very enjoyable and thought provoking! This story is the point of view of the oldest sister, Mahlah. I'm looking forward to the other four sisters stories! Deb- PBG Booklover

Even though this book is outside the genres I normally read, I felt really uplifted when I finished it! Mahlah's rock-solid faith in God despite some super tough circumstances really challenged my faith and left me feeling inspired to be brave. I liked that there was romance (I don't read Biblical fiction a lot, but I felt there was more romance than most Biblical fiction) and I REALLY liked Noah and Jeremiah, who will feature in the next book. I wasn't quite as big of a fan of the romantic hero in this story - I didn't feel like he worked hard enough to win the heroine and apart from childhood attraction I wasn't certain why she loved him - but the fact that this book left me smiling even though the genre is way outside what I normally read means it had to be 4 stars for me. Was cool that it really brought biblical characters to life and reminded me that they were people with emotions and daily problems. I received a copy of this novel from the publisher.
