Concert pianist Evan finally receives his big break. He’s on tour playing his passion and getting paid well to do it, he’s in love with a beautiful woman who just finished her own degree in nursing, and he’s about to propose in extravagant style. Even though their relationship has been long distance, he plans to go home and start his new life with her.

The virus lockdown skews all his plans.

Risé is working and living at a hospital with acutely ill patients. The precautions in place preclude any interaction with her family, with her friends, and with the man she is hoping will be her husband. How can he be, when no one knows how long this pandemic will last?

Health protocols, full personal protection regalia, social distancing, and video-chatting aren’t enough. How can their relationship hold when the world is falling apart? With wise words from those who love them, Evan and Risé find that being apart is hard, but with God, all things are possible.

God hasn’t changed. This story about a young, new nurse, Risé, is set amid a pandemic where people are socially-distanced and isolated. (Sound familiar?) As Christmas approaches, her boyfriend, Evan, wants to propose to her. But how can he, when they can’t even be in the same room together? Fear and uncertainty prowl around, and the appearance of Risé’s ex-boyfriend with his abusive past causes additional concern. But one of the characters, Toppy, makes a statement that becomes the overarching theme. “God hasn’t changed.” No matter how uncertain or concerning times are, this is one unequivocal truth. Jody Day has written a beautiful reminder of God’s faithfulness and love in a world filled with brokenness and uncertainty.

With God, all things are possible. How many people have expressed a similar reminder since the virus interrupted lives? I believe it took courage for Ms. Day to write about how the pandemic affected distance lovers concert pianist Evan and nurse Risé. Someone from her past adds to Risé’s stress. The similar names that get mixed up made me chuckle. Evan and Risé found ways to connect, and find hope among the chaos and quarantine. A sweet HEA topped this story of overcoming.
