It’s Christmas and DS Zander Ellery is buried in work. He’s tried hard to put the events of Jack’s House, an undercover operation, behind him, yet his thoughts keep returning to Kate. She promised to keep in touch, and she hasn’t.

Kate Dahlbeck left town after the events of Jack’s House. With her past exposed, no home and no job, she fled to her brother to work for him. Now she’s up to her neck in trouble, on the run and can only think of one person to help. Zander with a zed.

Zander and his partner, DC Isabel York, agree to help. It doesn’t take much investigating before Zander understands that Kate’s situation is far worse, far messier, and far more dangerous than he first realised.

Another Great Christmas Whodunnit from Clare Revell How excited to be reunited with Kate and Zander (with a Zed) from another of Ms. Revell’s books, The House that Jack Built. The two had fallen in love on a reality TV show in the previous book. They vow to keep their budding relationship alive, but then Kate disappears, cutting off all communication with Zander. When Kate gets caught in the middle of a murder at the church where she works, she goes into hiding and seeks out the only person she thinks can help her - Policeman Zander. But, when the two are reunited, everything changes. Zander wonders if Kate is really the woman he fell in love with in Jack’s House. As with all of Ms. Revell’s books, the characters are intriguing and the plot well-developed. A great mystery for the Christmas season. Oh yes, and there’s a man in a kilt. Who doesn’t love that?

Of Clare Revell’s three outstanding new Christmas stories, this one is my favorite. If you’ve already fallen in love with Detectives Ellery and York, this installment will be particularly satisfying. What’s not to love? An unresolved romance, mystery, a bit of danger, great family and workplace relationships, Christmas, and other spoilers I won’t give away. Not to mention all the delightful British colloquialisms that Revell’s readers have come to expect and love. An unexpected and unwanted pregnancy is treated efficiently with compassion, in line with Biblical principles without the hammer coming down. Brava! What next for Britain’s best dynamic duo? I can’t wait to find out.

This story began with a bang and two immediate questions, “What’s on the USB?” and “Who’s the baby’s father?” Kate and DS Zander reconnect in Headley Cross. She’s running and he’s investigating. Her pregnancy takes him by surprise. The biblical story of Tamar and Amnon is a perfect illustration of Kate’s case. Zander took on the role of Joseph in the Christmas story, and asked Kate to marry him. “Heart to heart, life to life.” Beautiful writing, as always. Great wedding prep and antics helped make is a stellar read.
