While the Israelites struggle to occupy the Promised Land of God, Mahlah bat Zelophehad is orphaned and left to care for her four sisters. But daughters of the dead are unable to inherit land, and it will take a miracle for Mahlah to obtain the means to care for her sisters and uphold the vow she made to her dying mother.

Mahlah must seek Moses, the leader of her people, and request something extraordinary—the right for a daughter to inherit her deceased father’s land. A right that will upset the ox-cart of male inheritance and thrust her into the role of a rebel.

But, God is the protector of the orphan and the widow, and five orphaned daughters need His help. With God, anything is possible. Even changing man’s tradition.

I was pleased to receive an advance copy of Lioness, Barbara Britton’s latest Biblical fiction. I have a stronger appreciation for what the Israelites went through during their journey in the desert, the hardships and cultural issues placed before them. Mahlah’s trust in God and the determination to keep her vow to her mother during adversity is inspiring. I have read all of her books, and I can honestly say this one is her best yet. Ms. Britton’s gift with the written language, as well as her knowledge of the Bible make this a must read. Anne P.

Barbara M. Britton is rapidly becoming my go-to author for fictionalized accounts of women in the Bible. In particular, I like the way her vivid descriptions paint a picture of everyday life in Biblical times. I thoroughly enjoyed her first series, The Tribes of Israel, and was excited to receive an advanced review copy of Lioness: Mahlah’s Journey, the first book in her new series, the Daughters of Zelophehad. Lioness focuses on Mahlah, the eldest daughter of the family, who becomes caretaker to her four younger sisters after their father’s tragic death. Rather than give in to despair, Mahlah fights to claim her family’s inheritance, challenging the rules of her patriarchal society. Although I was often frustrated with the men in this story, I found myself cheering internally every time Mahlah stood her ground. Her relationship with her sisters was another of the story’s strengths, and I am looking forward to reading about their journeys in Britton’s next two books.

The wind and sand of the desert fail to deter Mahlah from finding a home for her sisters and taking hold of her family’s rightful inheritance. Mahlah is confident that the Lord will answer her prayers and is determined to make the tribe elders listen, even if they don’t want to bother because she’s a woman. In Lioness: Mahlah’s Journey, author Barb M. Britton introduces readers to a brave, strong-willed young woman willing to risk her life for the safety of her four younger sisters. Mahlah’s story is the 1st book in the series, The Daughters of Zelophehad. After her father dies, Mahlah, the eldest, must honor her mother’s last dying wish, to care for her siblings. At seventeen, Mahlah takes on the parental duties that challenge her patience and reward her spirit. Lioness is a beautiful coming-of-age story that is a pleasure to read. Ms. Britton’s eye for detail takes readers back to a time long forgotten. While rooting for Mahlah during her journey, readers are reminded how family,
