At PBG, our<br \/>\ncurrent list is fluid, simply because sometimes, the wrong word can be used the<br \/>\nright way.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nA few of the throwaway phrases I tend to eye with suspicion,<br \/>\nand then edit out (or not):<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nTo tell the truth<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nTruth be told<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAccording to<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nHard to believe<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nGoing to go<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlong with the fact<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOf all people<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAnything but<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWhat on earth<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIn the first place<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIn order to<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nIn particular<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nNot to mention<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nNo doubt<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nI\u2019ve got to (and its buddies &#8211; We\u2019ve got to, You\u2019ve got to) <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAs well as<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAs it was<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAt least<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThat\u2019s for sure<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nNot a word<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSo in truth<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAll along<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nUp to this point\/At that point<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAfter all<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAs far as<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nLike I said<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nA done deal<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThe whole thing<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nHard to believe <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nWorked out well<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOverused words I tend to glare menacingly at and then edit<br \/>\nout (or not):<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nInstead<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nActually<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlmost<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAlthough <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nBecause<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nReally<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nStill<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nThough<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nUsually<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nLike \u2013 often used in place of \u2018as if\u2019<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSpellings we agreed upon at PBG, despite American<br \/>\nthesauruses (thesaurasii?):<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nOK<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAll right (not alright)<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nSneaked (not snuck)<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAnd if you choose to use British spellings:<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nHonour<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nColour<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nMoustache<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nNeighbour<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nRumour<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nFlavour<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAnother one I look at carefully is the word, \u2018realized.\u201d&nbsp; Usually, when I see it, the sentence is<br \/>\npassive.&nbsp; One can activate the sentence<br \/>\neasily.&nbsp; Example:<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<b><i>As James turned the corner, he realized the house was in flames.<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nA better way:<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<b><i>James turned the corner.&nbsp; The house<br \/>\nwas in flames<\/i><\/b>.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\nAs with all things, writing and editing is subjective.&nbsp; Should the phrase or word be perfect for the<br \/>\nsentence, or the character, I will leave it in.&nbsp;<br \/>\nSuch a phrase that often gets left in is \u201cgoing to go.\u201d &nbsp;When it is written as dialogue, it is natural<br \/>\nin American speech.&nbsp; If it is repeated by<br \/>\ntwo or three characters in speech, I sometimes edit one out for readability.&nbsp; Used in a telling sentence, it\u2019ll most likely<br \/>\nbe edited out.&nbsp; <\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<p>The \u2018find\u2019 function (under the edit tab) in MS Word can be quite useful<br \/>\nin giving authors a chance to edit before turning in a submission.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of editors have a list of words they prefer not to see at all, prefer to see as little as possible, or prefer to be spelled or used only in certain ways.&nbsp;
