One of the initial ideas that came to my mind as I writing The Keeper\u2019s Secret was the way someone\u2019s marriage falls apart. That was something I didn\u2019t know much about. My parents had been married forever, as had their parents. My in-laws, too, were married for eons. Before hubby and I were married, we went to a Pre-Cana program for couples planning marriage and after that we went to an Engaged Encounter program. We wanted to be as well prepared for marriage as we had been for our careers.<\/p>\n

After we had been married for a while, we volunteered to head the Pre-Cana team at our church. We did that for seven years and offered lots of advice to young people getting ready for marriage. We weren\u2019t experts, but we were aware of the pitfalls in marriage that should be avoided.<\/p>\n

Then a friend of mine confessed she was having serious marital problems. In every marriage, there will be arguments and disagreements, but this went beyond that. My friend\u2019s belief in herself was shattered by her spouse. He destroyed her self-esteem. His anger frightened her. It got to the point that if I didn\u2019t hear from my friend, I worried for her safety.<\/p>\n

Eventually, she filed for divorce and though going through a divorce was still difficult for her, I was relieved because I no longer feared for her safety.<\/p>\n

In The Keeper\u2019s Secret, Evie\u2019s husband is unfaithful. He also abuses Evie and threatens to hurt their child. In marriage a man should love his wife as he loves his own body. (See Ephesians 5:28.) Marriage should never involve abuse.<\/p>\n
