Here\u2019s a quick tip on how to know when awhile is one word or two: <b>Never write \u201c<i>for<\/i> for a time.\u201d<\/b> Let me explain. <\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support this audio<br \/>\n<br \/>\nA while, two words, means \u201ca time.\u201d It\u2019s an article (a) plus a noun (while). \u201cLet\u2019s think on that for a while.\u201d When we\u2019re using a while correctly, we can replace \u201ca while\u201d with another article<b>+<\/b>time combination. \u201cLet\u2019s think on that&nbsp;for a while.\u201d OR \u201cLet\u2019s think on that for a week.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Awhile, one word, means \u201cfor a time.\u201d It\u2019s an adverb, and its meaning already includes the preposition <i>for<\/i>. \u201cLet\u2019s think on that awhile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I know it sounds a little confusing since both a while and awhile deal with time; but if we use our quick tip to know when awhile is one word or two, we can eliminate making a mistake.<\/p>\n<p>When in doubt, rewrite your sentence substituting awhile (one word) with the phrase \u201cfor a time.\u201d If the resulting sentence reads for (for a time), then it\u2019s a clear sign you need to use a while (two words.)<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\u201cLet\u2019s think on that for awhile\u201d means&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\u201cLet\u2019s think on that for for a time\u201d (WRONG).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\u201cLet\u2019s think on that awhile\u201d means<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\u201cLet\u2019s think on that for a time\u201d (CORRECT).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m Nicola Martinez, Editor-in-Chief at Pelican Book Group.
