“When dandelions go to seed, the wind comes and blows away the top part, known as the parachute. Compare that to the wind of the Holy Spirit who comes and sweeps away our heartaches. We, the strong stem, remain standing.” Luke stepped back. He looked over the top of Carol as though something across the road caught his attention. “Listen, Carol, I’d love to ask you out for a cup of coffee.”

“That sounds…” Wonderful, perfect.

“Awful…I know. I had no right to ask you—not today. Timing has never been my strong point. I need to find my family, who I’m sure won’t forgive me for missing my aunt’s funeral. I bet your family has plans as well.” Luke squinted as he looked across the road, cupping his hand over his eyes to shade them from the noon sunlight. “Again, Carol, I’m sorry about your mother’s death. May God fill you with His Divine strength and peace.” He raised his hand to gently cup her cheek. Time seemed to stand still and Carol found herself wishing for the moment to never end. The space between them seemed to vanish as he ever so gently, and for only the briefest of moments, touched her lips with his own. As he stepped back, with that adorable lopsided smile on his face, she found herself speechless, breathless and very unsure what came next.

She couldn’t let the moment end there. Seemingly of their own volition, her hands rose to rest on the lapels of his jacket. “You have my heartfelt sorrow concerning your aunt’s passing.”

She kissed him just as briefly, hearing gasps in the background. Another breeze blew the sound away.

When she opened her eyes, Luke stared intently into her own.
